Dr Dewald Coolen is a specialist surgeon in private practice at Medi Clinic Vergelegen in Somerset West, offering progressive evidence based surgical services in the fields of breast surgery, endocrine surgery, gastroenterology surgery, upper GIT surgery, hepatobilliary surgery, colorectal surgery as well as other general surgical procedures.

His special interests include minimal access (laparascopic/keyhole) surgery, especially in hernia procedures, as well as breast, thyroid and colorectal oncology.

The practice focuses on patient comfort and accurate diagnosis by offering the patient the option of in room gastroscopy and colonoscopy procedures. We also make use of in room ultrasound guidance for biopsies and fine needle aspirations.

Welcome to Dr Dewald Coolen

Dr Dewald Coolen matriculated as head boy and top matriculant from Klerksdorp High School in 1995 and went on to study medicine at the University of the Free State. He graduated in 2001 and completed his houseman year and community service at the Rustenburg Provincial Hospital. It was during these years that his interest in surgery first elicited, as he thoroughly enjoyed assisting both the state and the local private practice surgeons. Find out more about Dr. Coolen

  • Can Dr Coolen do an operation without a seeing the patient?

    Unfortunately, not. It is essential for Dr Coolen to consult with a patient before an operation. The patient’s medical history and current problem should be discussed. A clinical examination and patient informed consent is essential before proceeding.

  • Can I go home straight after a colonoscopy or gastroscopy?

    Yes, but you are not allowed to drive or operate heavy machinery until the next morning,

  • Is Dr Coolen contracted in?

    Dr Coolen charges Discovery Health’s Classic rate. The practice also has contracts with Fedhealth and Bonitas. Your specific Medical Aid Scheme or Plan might pay less or more than the charged rates. Please feel free to ask for a quotation for your procedure.

  • Is there an anaesthetist involved whilst doing a colonoscopy or gastroscopy?

    An anaesthetist is involved during all colonoscopies. Dr Coolen will administer sedation during a gastroscopy.

  • What is the consultation fee and when is it payable?

    Please contact our practice for our current consultation fees.

    First consultation fee is discounted if paid at the practice at the time of the first consultation (and claimed back from your medical aid fund). We accept cash and cheques and debit and credit card facilities are available.

    Second consultation fee is discounted if paid at the practice at the time of the first consultation (and claimed back from your medical aid fund).

    The follow up consultation after a theatre procedure is included in the fees of the procedure.

  • Does Dr Coolen do operations in provincial hospitals?

    No. Dr Coolen only operates at Mediclinic Vergelegen and Paardevlei Private Hospital.

  • After having a colonoscopy or gastroscopy, when will I receive my results?

    Dr Coolen will discuss your results with you directly after your procedure. If any biopsies were done, this will be sent to the laboratory. After receiving the report, you will be informed telephonically after 2 – 3 working days.

  • Which day of the week does Dr Coolen operate?

    Dr Coolen operates on a Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday morning and Friday morning, every week.

  • Does Dr Coolen consult on Saturdays?

    No, only from Mondays to Fridays.

  • Does your practice claim from a patient’s medical aid?

    Yes, our Accounts Department will submit your account electronically to your medical aid. The patient will be notified when there is an outstanding balance.
